Hyderabad isn’t the first city people think of for ghost stories.

Then you start asking around, and everyone has a cousin who knows someone who saw something near a lake, a fort, or an old house with its lights on.

We’ve gathered seven of the best-known haunted places in Hyderabad, from an abandoned house with a real, unsettling history to a couple of everyday spots you’d never expect on a list like this. Every one comes with the story as it’s told and a clear note on where the evidence stops.

And since a few of these places are locked up, fenced off, or best left alone, we’ve added a bonus at the end: a way to get the scare without the trespassing.

Kundanbagh Haunted House

If Hyderabad has one famous ghost story, this is it.

The Kundanbagh house made headlines in 2002, when a thief who broke in reportedly found three dead bodies inside. According to Nativeplanet’s write-up, they’d been dead for months, while neighbours had kept seeing and hearing the women in the house.

Today the property is deserted and entry is prohibited. Police are said to patrol the area, and the same write-up notes that a light is still seen on the first floor at night, with no electricity connected.

Not everyone buys the ghost angle, either.

Some locals say the story was exaggerated or tied up with a property dispute. That’s the honest picture: a real, grim discovery, and a legend that grew around it.

Admire it from the road, if at all.

Khairatabad Science College

An abandoned science college in Khairatabad turns up again and again on local haunted-place threads.

One Redditor wrote that it’s “pretty spooky”, with broken bangles, old mattresses and pillows, and what they thought might be bones (they weren’t sure if they were real). The same commenter claimed it was still under CID investigation, which we couldn’t confirm.

Treat all of it as hearsay.

What we can say is that people describe the place the same way: dark, empty and uncomfortable.

It’s not a place to wander into.

Golconda Fort

Golconda is the big, atmospheric one.

The legend here is Taramati, a courtesan who danced for royalty and is said to still linger. Siasat’s list of Hyderabad’s haunted places says visitors claim to hear her singing and dancing at night, and the fort turns up on plenty of other lists for the same story.

No official investigation backs any of it.

But if you want atmosphere with a legend attached, a daytime visit is the safe way to get it.

Road No. 12 Graveyard, Banjara Hills

This one’s right in the middle of one of the city’s busiest neighbourhoods.

A graveyard on Banjara Hills Road No. 12 shows up in Siasat’s list, which says passers-by at night report streetlights flickering on and off, sudden temperature drops and even tyre punctures near the site.

No formal investigation has verified any of this, and there’s an ordinary explanation for flickering lights and cold spots near trees and open ground.

Still, you may think twice next time you drive past after dark.

Ramoji Film City

Ramoji Film City is the first entry on The Indian Wire’s list of haunted places in Hyderabad, which reports alleged paranormal incidents there but admits there’s no proof. Siasat adds that it’s said to be built on a former battlefield, with crew members reporting accidents, flickering lights and apparitions.

It’s a studio complex built from sets, so it’s easy to see how ghost stories attach themselves to it.

We run games at our Ramoji Film City location, where the sets are designed to look like the real thing, which is about as haunted as we’ll claim to be.

Shamshabad Airport

You wouldn’t think it, but Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is on the haunted list.

Siasat says employees and visitors report seeing a woman in a white saree on the runways, along with unexplained noises in quieter areas. The airport hasn’t acknowledged anything paranormal.

Next time you’re sitting at the gate waiting for a delayed flight, take a look out the window.

Probably nothing.

But now you’ll be watching the runway a little closer.

Uppal Stadium

Here’s another one you wouldn’t expect.

The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal is home to Sunrisers Hyderabad and hosted the IPL finals in 2017 and 2019. A blog listing Hyderabad’s haunted places says the stadium turns into a scary place at night. It gives no specifics, but a huge empty stadium after dark does half the work for a ghost story.

So the next time you’re watching cricket there, with 39,000-plus people roaring around you, remember someone somewhere thinks the place is haunted.

If you spot something spooky in the stands, it’s probably just a very committed fan.

Bonus: Lock N Escape’s Horror Rooms

Frequently asked questions

Where is the scary house in Hyderabad?

The best-known scary house is the Kundanbagh house, near Begumpet. Entry is prohibited today, and it’s said to be patrolled by police.

What is the legend behind Ayesha Villa?

Ayesha Villa appears on some haunted-place lists, but we couldn’t find any credible, documented story behind it. Many lists repeat the name without detail, so we’ve left it out of the main seven.

Which is the coldest place in Hyderabad?

For a spooky kind of cold, the graveyard on Banjara Hills Road No. 12 is the one people talk about. Siasat reports passers-by noticing sudden temperature drops there at night, though nothing has been formally verified.

What is the most haunted location in Hyderabad?

Kundanbagh is the most frequently cited, partly because it grew out of a real event in 2002. Golconda Fort, Ramoji Film City and the Road No. 12 graveyard are close behind in how often they come up.
